NOTE: Some of the later generations (e.g. #40 and above)
are still somewhat under construction.
  1. Patrick1 COONEY was born in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, in Ireland. He was married 24 Nov 1805 at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John s, Newfoundland, to Mary REDDY of Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Patrick was a soldier with the Royal Newfoundland Fencibles during the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars. In 1816, the troops were disbanded in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Patrick, along with 98 other officers and men, accepted the invitation to settle in Nova Scotia, in a place called Sherbrooke Settlement (now known as New Ross) in Lunenburg County. The settlers were rationed for almost three years and when the rationing stopped, many left the settlement. In 1819, land was officially granted to the remaining 68 settlers and their families (Patrick received 100 acres). In 1822, an additional grant was made to the settlers (Patrick received another 100 acres at that time). He sold the entire 200 acres "lying and being in Sherbrooke aforesaid westside of Gold River being Lots No. 60 and 18 in the Division Letter G containing each containing 100 acres more or less" for forty pounds on 19 June 1823 and moved to an as yet unknown location (possibly Chester or New Brunswick). One interesting further piece of information has come to light, though it has not been proven that it refers to this Patrick Cooney)....the Acadian Recorder published an article in its Saturday, 27 May 1826, issue telling of the wreck of the ship 'Francis Mary' , enroute from New Brunswick to Liverpool, England, with a load of timber. Among those who died was one Patrick Cooney. This article goes on to mention that the survivors of this wreck did so by eating those who perished! I tried to get a copy of some articles that were supposedly published in the Liverpool Transcript but they could not find them.

    Their children, surname COONEY, were:
    1. Thomas2 ch. 23 March 1807 at St. John's, NF
    2. Patrick2 b. ca 1810 .... later censuses say Newfoundland but no record of his baptism in St. John Basilica records (1805 to 1815); possibly born in Quebec, as the Royal Newfoundland Fencibles were stationed there from 1807 to 1812.
    3. John2 b. 9 December 1816, in Sherbrooke Settlement, Lunenburg County, NS. No information found on him anywhere in the province, except the record of his birth.

  2. Thomas2 COONEY (Patrick1) was baptized 23 March 1807 at the St. John the Baptist Basilica in St. John's, Newfoundland. He came to Sherbrooke Settlement with his father in 1816. He was a cooper by trade and he married Dorcas VAUGHAN (daughter of John Armstrong Vaughan and his wife, the widow Rebecca Dolliver) in Chester, Lunenburg County, on 11 February 1826 (as noted in the diary of the Rev. Joseph Dimock). He sold land in Chester (his wife's inheritance) in 1829 from his home in Liverpool. Bought land in Sherbrooke in 1837 and sold it in 1841. He is mentioned several times in the diary of Edward Ross, of Ross Farm in Sherbrooke, mostly in regard to his barrels or to his helping out with hay mowing...Edward Ross' entry for Wed. May 12, 1841 -- "Cooney's family moved out today...". After selling the property in Sherbrooke, he apparently moved to Chester, where in 1846 he sold the remainder of their Chester property prior to moving to Port Medway. Dorcas COONEY died 8 November 1866 in East Port Medway and Thomas subsequently married a Martha BAKER on 6 October 1867. Thomas moved in with his daughter Mary LENETON prior to the 1891 census and there sometime after this (but prior to the 1901 census).
